From October 5th to 7th, 2024, the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism (CSSS), Mumbai, in collaboration with Disha Foundation, Jaunpur, hosted a transformative workshop in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. Co-led by Neha Dabhade, Executive Director of CSSS, and Mithila Raut, Program Coordinator, this course brought together around 30 participants from diverse backgrounds, religions, and castes.

The mission of the workshop was to empower individuals to stand against the violence often justified in the name of religion and raise awareness about the critical issue of freedom of religion or belief. Throughout the sessions, we emphasized essential human needs—like education, healthcare, and the right to express ourselves freely etc. showing how they align with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This workshop was not just about lectures; it was an interactive experience where participants engaged through games, plays, songs, and presentations. We explored how our identities—shaped by religion, gender, caste, and occupation etc. impact our treatment in society, recognizing that some identities come with privilege while others face challenges.

Participants delved into the concept of Freedom of Religion or Belief (FORB), examining how it can be violated by families, communities, and governments through discrimination, restrictions and violence. Equipped with practical strategies, attendees learned about emergency response tactics, community building, and healing approaches.

The feedback was inspiring! One participant noted, “This workshop made me realize that, religion is an important part of our lives that is being politicized. I now see how the government distracts us from real issues like electricity and transport, keeping us engaged in religious debates.”

Another participant shared insights about the recent ban on non-vegetarian food during Navratri, noting that many people traditionally consume non-vegetarian dishes during this time. This law, which has been imposed by the government in recent years, signifies a troubling interference in personal lives. By dictating what people can eat and when, the government is infringing upon individuals’ rights to make personal choices, thus violating their Freedom of Religion or Belief (FORB). This restriction highlights the urgent need to advocate for policies that respect personal freedoms and cultural practices.

Together, we are paving the way for a society where everyone can live without fear or discrimination. Human rights are universal and belong to us all, regardless of our backgrounds.

A huge thank you to all participants for your passion and commitment to creating positive change! Let’s continue working toward a more inclusive and just society for everyone.
